When Jen rolled out of bed the next morning, she scowled at the alarm. There was no reason for her to have to get up after only a few hours’ sleep and she couldn’t quite wrap her foggy brain over why the alarm clock had insisted on waking her. She stumbled towards the kitchen and discovered that the coffee had already been started and there was just under a half pot left. Sending up a prayer of thanks to the coffee gods for sending someone to make her morning just a little bit easier, she poured a cup and gathered her thoughts, trying to make her eyes focus.

The phone book still lay open on the counter where she had left it, which reminded her why she had needed to be awake. “Oh yeah,” she nodded as she took another drink of her coffee. “I’m supposed to get the list today.”

Strange sounds from outside caught her attention and she wandered towards the window to see what was going on. The living room was strangely dim for that time of morning and it took her a second to remember that the window was boarded over. Cautiously, she opened her front door to have a peek outside, hoping that whatever was making the noise wouldn’t attack her until she had at least been able to get dressed.

To her surprise, she found Nacho and Jose in her front yard, hauling an enormous cardboard box up to the side of her house. Their truck was parked behind her Jeep and Paco stood in the back of the truck, pulling out tools. When Nacho and Jose reached the front wall of her house, they set the box on the ground and leaned it against her front wall, just past where the plywood that Patrick had put up ended.

When Jose looked up and saw Jen, he smiled and waved. “Patrick wanted us to bring over a new window for you.” Leaving the box for Nacho to open, he jogged over to Jen. “He’s tied up with the electrical team today, so he figured we’d have enough time to get the new window in place by the time he was done.”

She nodded and took another sip of her coffee. “Well, if you need anything, I’ll be inside.”

She closed the door and walked across her living room, surprised that Troy was still asleep, with all the noise that the guys were making outside. Shrugging it away, she poured herself another cup of motivation and headed for the shower.

By the time she finished in the bathroom and got dressed, Troy was already awake and halfway through his own breakfast. “I thought you wanted to head out this morning,” he looked up from his toast as she walked into the room.

“I am,” she answered as she poured another cup of coffee. “But I wanted to get a shower first, don’t you?” She leaned over and sniffed the hybrid. “You smell kind of ripe, there.”

He lifted and arm and sniffed as well. Making a face, he flinched.
